Top Ten Scores of 2011

5. The Skin I Live In by Alberto Iglesias

I have already talked about Alberto Iglesias on this list but I believe this man deserves another spot.  The way this man used nothing but strings to score almost the entire movie it was just brilliant.  He scores the movie with brilliant undertone while taking over the screen at the same time while adding a Spanish flair to every single track.  It is just wonderful and worked synergistically with the script and cinematography to provide a wonderful (yet disturbing) film watching experience.

4. Drive by Cliff Martinez

Cliff Martinez is already a man who has made my top ten list this year has graced us again with his presence by his AMAZING work on the score for the movie Drive.  Unlike a lot of the scores on this list, it doesn’t just complement what is happening on screen but it mirrors the moods and behaviours of the main character of the movie, the Driver (played by Ryan Gosling).  In fact the track which is embedded below is one of the tracks that did not only accomplish that, but along with the cinematography of the scene which it is a part of, is a scene-stealer.  This is what earns this score the number 4 spot on my list.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 by Alexandre Desplat

Alexandre Desplat brings his composing genius to a franchise that has had me enthralled for most of my life (this is including the books guys).  This score, which I think is a lot more subtle that the one for the 1st part of the finale, is still very, very brilliant and is one of the best of the year (obviously) and deserves this, the number 3 spot, on my list not just because of how wonderful it is within the film but also outside of the film to just sit down and listen to it in its entirety while reading, studying or just staring into space relaxing.

2. Hanna by The Chemical Brothers

Seemingly inspired by the success of Trent Reznor and Daft Punk in the scoring game, The Chemical Brothers debuted into the realm of composing for film with Hanna and boy was it brilliant.  I have no idea what instrument they used (though it was probably a synthesizer) but unlike a lot of the scores on this list, this one was loud, boisterous and flamboyant for the entire film and it just got me.  Ever since this film came out in April, I have listened to this score so often that for a while it was the only thing I played on my iTunes.  This wonderful debut has busted up to my number 2 spot on this year’s Top Ten list.

1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have done it again.  They have come out of nowhere to hit me with an amazing soundtrack full of amazing tracks to complement a great movie.  The track which I have featured below is a great example of their achievement.  This track played over the opening credits of the film and is a great way to introduce (with a bang might I add) the audience to the extremely DARK nature of the film and it continues all the way to the end with a great score that must be recognized as the best of the year.

That’s it.  Hope you liked my list.  There will be three more up within the next 24 hours that will hopefully give you guys some inspiration to watch movies or listen to scores that you never would have before.
