Top Ten Films of 2010

by Nicholas Robinson

Hello my faithful readers!  After a wonderful year of reviewing movies it is time to finally share with you my top ten movies of 2010.  There have been a lot of great movies this year.  In fact, the shortlist that I made for this list actually consisted of 19 movies before I weeded it down to ten.  It was a gruelling process, but I got it done.  Before I start though, I would like to share with you the movies that I was unable to watch from last year and might have made this list.  These are: Un Prophete, Enter the Void, Fish Tank, Jack Goes Boating, The King’s Speech and TRON: Legacy.  So, without further ado, here are my Top Ten Films of 2010.

Honourable Mentions (not in any particular order): Kick-Ass, The A-Team, The Other Guys, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, I Love You Phillip Morris, Casino Jack, Catfish, Paper Man and Cyrus.

10. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Edgar Wright continues to amaze us with his newest movie, an adaptation of a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley.  This year he gave us a movie that made us laugh, say “Ouch” while squinting, and just plain entertained us.  This movie is not only extremely enjoyable, but one that you can watch over and over again without stopping, one that you can just fast forward to any scene, laugh and enjoy.  It is another in a series of great movies with a great cast, wonderful cameos, an amazing soundtrack and a story that makes you want to dust of your SNES and put in Super Street Fighter 2 just like the old days.  I just cannot not praise this movie when it comes up in conversation and so it deserves the #10 spot on my top ten list.

9. The Killer Inside Me

Casey Affleck gives one of the best performances of his career as Lou Ford, the homicidal deputy sheriff in a small town in West Texas.  His tale of sex, murder and revenge is very simple, yet supplemented with great dialogue and great performances that just ooze brilliance.  From the moment we see Lou drive up to Joyce’s house to the denouement of the story, every little scene is done to the best of the ability of the actors and so it takes #9 on my top ten list.

8. Animal Kingdom

This movie was filled with wonderful performances given by quite a few unknowns as well as a few big Australian names.  Each of the actors and actresses gave a wonderful performance and the way they tell the story of the downfall of the strongest crime family in Australia is just brilliant.  So brilliant in face that it grabs #8 on my top ten of 2010 list.

7. The Social Network

David Fincher gives us another wonderfully brilliant movie, this time centred around the lawsuits against Mark Zuckerberg by his best friend Eduardo Saverin and the Winklevoss Twins.  The way they show the story of the invention of Facebook through flashbacks during the lawsuits instead of the usual linear travel through the story.  This, along with great performances by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, and an amazing score by Trent Reznor gives The Social Network #7 on this list.
