TV Recap – January 9 – January 14, 2011

by Nicholas Robinson

Here is another new column this week where I sum up what happened in the TV shows that I watch during the week.  As I don’t watch any shows on a Saturday, it seemed like a good day to put the column.  I also give the episode a rating based on how much I liked it.  Hope you enjoy.

Sunday

Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

Former police sergeant Vince Faraday is framed as notorious criminal Chess and seemingly dies in an explosion when ARK corporation security forces open fire on him. Mentored by Max Malini among a gang of bank robbers who use carnival talents, Vince must leave behind his wife Dana and son Trip to fight against corruption in Palm City. Villains include Scales and nemesis Chess, whose other persona is ARK billionaire Peter Fleming. Under the guise of The Cape, his son’s favourite comic book character, Vince must trust mysterious blogger Orwell to help in the fight.

I give this episode a 8/10 for good comedy and fun action that has potential to become a good show

Season 1 – Episode 2 – Tarot

Ark Corporation’s aim is at prison privatization, but The Cape will battle Chess and his newest ally Cain to stop it. As Chess and Cain set their sights on Secretary for the Bureau of Prisons Patrick Portman, the Cape intervenes, barely surviving the encounter. Orwell, Max Malini, and the circus gang band together to help the Cape recover and also save Patrick.

I give this episode a 6.5/10 for still having some fun action but seemed quite procedural.

Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

Frank Gallagher, a father of six, spends more time partying than raising his kids, so his eldest daughter Fiona provides adult supervision for her younger siblings. When Fiona is robbed, she meets a handsome young man, while Lip makes a discovery about Ian.

This episode gets a 9/10 from me for being funny, dramatic and wonderfully acted by all people involved  (and before you ask, no, I have not seen the original UK version)

Season 1 -Episode 2 – Cabal

Detective Zen is brought in to rule on the death of a famous aristocrat. While the Ministry wants him to rule a simple suicide, Detective Zen is not so sure.

This episode gets an 8/10 due to its good drama, acting and mystery

Monday

Season 3 – Episode 12 – Poof! You’re Dead

Castle and Beckett investigate the murder of the owner of a historic magic shop found dead in a Houdini’s water torture tank. Meanwhile, Lanie and Esposito are trying to keep their relationship secret and Castle ends his relationship with Gina.

I give this episode a 7/10 for being an average episode in a good show.

Season 3 – Episode 9 – Funhouse

Lightman tries to get a patient released from a mental hospital, in the process he questions his own sanity forcing him to face his own past.

I give this episode an 8/10 for not only sticking to the show’s good points but adding some backstory and depth to Cal Lightman

Season 3 – Episode 10 – Rebound

Lightman is hired by a wealthy woman to look into her new boyfriend’s background.

I give this episode a 7/10 for sticking true to the show’s good points but keeping it bland other than that.

Tuesday

Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

Former heavyweight boxing champion Patrick “Lights” Leary struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring.

I give this episode a 7.5/10 for some good acting and a story that has a lot of potential.

Season 1 – Episode 12 – No Ordinary Brother

When Jim’s brother Mike learns that his brother has powers, he attempts to use JJ’s powers to win at the horse track. Meanwhile, Katie receives a promotion, and Daphne comes to believe a student accused of drug use is innocent.

I give this episode a 6/10 for sticking to the procedure that all its predecessors have.

Season 2 – Episode 2 – Serpent’s Tooth

Anna and Diana square off in the dark bowels of the Mothership – Diana has been down there for 15 years and not had a single glimpse of Anna. Meanwhile, Erica has Tyler’s blood analyzed, and suspects the V’s did something sinister to her when she was pregnant with him.

I give this episode a 8/10 for being consistent and giving us a good story while still sticking to the context of the show instead of going off on tangents.

Wednesday

Season 1 – Episode 12 – Nevada vs Wayne

Nick defends a young man charged with sexual assault because of a personal connection. Meanwhile, Pete gets assigned to jury duty.

I give this episode an 8/10 for keeping up the acting and comedy while still having to stick to a procedural storyline.

Thursday

Season 1 – Episode 13 – The Better Father

Bonnie and Vince discover that their first wedding wasn’t legal, so they plan a new ceremony and Ed becomes disgruntled when he finds out that Bonnie has invited her father.

I give this episode 7/10 for doing what it has done for the past 12 episodes, which is make me laugh, but just not as much as usual.

Friday

Season 2 – Episode 9 – Imbroglio

Chance and Ilsa try to take in an opera along with Ilsa’s sister-in-law, Connie, but get more than they bargain for when criminals take the audience hostage.

I give this episode an 8/10 for keeping up the standard of a good action show while keeping backstory in mind.

Season 2 – Episode 10 – Cool Hand Guerrero

During a visit to the south, the locals frame Guerrero for his friend’s murder and send him to prison, and the team have to get him out.

I give this episode an 8.5/10 because along with keeping up its quality, it gives some unexpected insight into Guerrero and his life.

One Response to “TV Recap – January 9 – January 14, 2011”

  1. I gave Lights Out a try this past week and I enjoyed it. Like you I’d probably go with a 7.5, but for me I think that it is because this was set up episode. I really have no idea where this is going. I could see this becoming absolutely addicting, or a huge boring bust. Guess we’ll see.
